Raagini Indian Restaurant

Raagini, the name means something different to everyone, per their imagination. To some, it means symphony or "raaga," the Indian classical music that is centuries old, but always fresh and relaxing. Pundit Ravi Shankar has mesmerized millions around the globe with its spell. To others, Raagini represents the most gracious woman with poise, elegance, valor and kindness, all in the form of a beaut...

Raagini Restaurant's Owner, Dr. Harmesh Mittal, Planting the First Seeds of a Vision,1994

Did you know that actress, writer, and arguably the most famous Indian cookbook author worlwide, Madhur Jaffrey, had no intention of writing about food at all? She happened to fall into the art to make a source of living when she ventured from the streets of London to New York City as a struggling artist.

Somewhat similarly, our very own Dr. Harmesh Mittal had "fallen" into opening Raagini restaurant nearly 17 years ago. Growing up in a small town in India, Samana, he always dreamed to own a restaurant which had always been a treat. However, Dr. Mittal also had striven to help those in need of better healthcare and decided to pursue medicine as a cardiologist instead. After settling down in New York, he still kept his dream to open a restaurant in his back pocket, and he had grown increasingly nostalgic about the sweet and spicy aromas of his family's kitchen in India.

Inquisitive about the restaurant industry, he and his wife, Dr. Asha Mittal, met with chefs in Manhattan and in Delhi when they traveled to visit family back home. They yearned to bring the luxuries, colors, scents, and vibrancies that were highlighted in Bollywood films to life. Thus, the idea of Raagini came into existence. Raagini's mission is to not only serve the best, most authentic food from all regions of India in New Jersey, but to also educate the community on the rich culture and history of the land and its people. Join on us on our culinary and cultural journey. See below for pictures from our Grand Opening in 1994!

Amazing place. Everything tastes amazing. If you like spicy, be sure to ask for it spicy, medium won't cut it.

Had the chicken korma, chicken tikka masala, and mutter paneer with naan and started with assorted veggie plate.

Everything could not have tasted better. Will return often. Hard to find Indian around this area.

Lunch combo is good. 2 vegetables and 1 meat over rice I got chicken tikka Masala chickpeas and lentils. Order cam with rice and naan $14.95 Good food but portions are small for being a lunch special.

Very reasonable portion sizes, without a doubt very tasty, and very affordable. Another awesome thing about this place is that it's BYOB. I definitely will return.

I did take out on Saturday night. When I went to pick up it was packed, and there was a line.

I can't wait to try out their other dishes.

This place is fantastic! Friendly staff when placing my delivery order. Fast delivery with hot food! I love the naan and chicken bryanni. The vegetable samosas were good too. If you are looking for authentic yummy Indian food this is the place for you! Yummy

OMG this is one of my new favorite places. I took ten people here for a meetup and everyone loved what they ordered. The food was perfectly spiced and had amazing flavor. The deserts were good and so were the drinks. This place is BYOB, so don't be afraid to bring some tasty Indian beers to go along with your food. The service is fast, friendly, and very accomodating.

My only complaint was that the AC and fans were not working, so it was a bit hot. I'm confident they've fixed the problem already.

My group put in a second request for this place; we're going to make that happen!!!!!

Great new Indian restaurant in Baldwin! My wife and I had lunch there and everything was delicious. Lunch is smaller portions of the dinner entrees at half the price. Service was good and very courteous. Making this a regular stop.

Great food... Indian food was needed in the area. I like the open kitchen concept but the place is small for the high demand, there isn't enough room in the waiting area so my recommendation is to call ahead and just go for pick up, although they deliver but delivery takes forever. They still need a few weeks to get situated.

Delicious Indian food that we needed in the Baldwin/Oceanside area. Went here Sat night and it apparently just opened. Was byob so we brought a bottle and enjoyed our meal.

Since it just opened the service was a little jittery but we didn't mind. It's very small and all the family members were helping out.

The samosas were excellent and the 2 dishes we ordered (chicken tikka masala and lamb rogan gosht) were cooked perfectly to our spice request.

Def will be back here soon.

Service is very polite; even the chef came out to see how everything is. It is in a small location, but feels cozy and comfortable inside. The spice level was spot on, was definitely not craving any more or less. The breads were perfectly cooked and had the right balance of toasty and soft.

Was here for lunch so far and the portion was just right for a light meal. Definitely on the list for a frequent meal.

I often feel bad for places with 4.5-5 star reviews bc the expectations are set pretty high, but I'm happy to say that Raagini deserves its high marks. The place itself is pretty tiny, but the tables are spaced well, so you're not right on top of others. Def not a place for groups over 4 though.

The service was excellent and didn't rush to get us out of there even when we stayed past 3pm (when they technically close). An order of naan, chana pindi, aloo gobi masal (both $11) was simple and delicious. Nothing too fancy, just food prepared well. Each dish is served in metal bowls that are deceivingly small, but don't stress, they have enough in them to fill you up. I also have to give them props for not stealing lappy 5000 after I left it in the restaurant. They didn't "lose it" they kept it nice and warm for me right in the front. Kudos!

While it's not quite up to New Chili & Curry (Hicksville) levels yet, Raagini is a solid place and will be home to many more visits from yours truly when I need my Indian fix.
